Simi Valley's Highlights and History

The city is home to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library that sits atop a scenic mountain on the west end of the valley – it is rumored that you can see all the way to the Channel Islands on the clearest of days. Originally inhabited by the Chumash Indians, it is believed that Simi Valley got its name from the Chumash Indian Village, “Shimiji,” which means “Pleasant Valley” or many say it also means “Valley of the Winds.” Either way, both are true of Simi Valley. In the early days, Simi Valley was “the country.” It was predominately farm and ranch land with citrus and avocado orchards. In 1795, Simi Valley, first called El Rancho San Jose de Garcia de Simi, approximately 100,000 acres was granted to Santiago Pico and Louis Pena during the Mexican Land Grants. Simi Valley’s land grant was said to be the largest ever made during that time.

Simi Valley was once home to a host of movie ranches. Corriganville is where many old western movies such as “The Lone Ranger”, “Zorro”, “Wild Bill Hickock”, “Annie Oakley’, and “Wyatt Earp” were all filmed. Corriganville’s movie ranch is gone now, but, is still home to many hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. In what is now called the Big Sky area, there was once a homestead compound where television shows such as “The Little House On The Prairie”, “Highway To Heaven”, and some episodes of “Dallas” were filmed.
